Sport Cycling Hegemony

Here’s what I wrote about the Oregon Manifest Constructor’s Design Challenge back in July:
Prediction (and I hope I’m wrong): The winning design will be a mountain bike hybrid of some sort with an aggressive seating posture. No fenders. No chain case. And difficult to ride dressed like the young woman pictured above.
Here are some photos [...]

Fenders Be Good

I like fenders.
I understand why a sport cyclist doesn’t want fenders on a road bike. But for utility bicycles fenders are nice to have because they keep road gunk off your clothes.
Some fenders, however, are better than others. Take a look at these two cruisers parked on the MSU campus this morning.

Both the front and [...]

Big City Sans Cars

Here’s a fascinating look at… hmmmmm… what to call this? The future? A future?
In any case, vehicle design student Marten Wallgren and his group recently won a Seymour Powell award for best concept in the “Future City Mobility” competition. They created a city system in which a futuristic bicycle is at the heart of an [...]

Chick Magnet

OK, so that headline might be over-selling it a bit. But here’s a fact: Ride into downtown Springfield on a Brompton and people notice. And ask questions.
I went to the Mudhouse for a muffin and coffee. I hang out there a lot. It’s a great place to read the paper and socialize. I’m something of [...]

Multi-Modal Dreams

My Brompton arrived today.

It’s nearly 100 degrees today and humid. So for most of the two hours that it’s been here I’ve been inside getting used to the fold and reading the manual.
The fold is very easy and very fast. Two tries and I’m a pro. Anyone would be
I took it out for [...]

Minor Items of Note

I just heard from NYCEWheels that my Brompton is finally on its way. I should have it by the middle of next week if not sooner This process took so long because I ordered a custom bicycle. I’ll have more to report when it comes.
The Sustainble Transportation Committee of Ozark Greenways met last [...]

Done Gone and Did It

Yesterday I placed an order for one of these
I have plans. Oh, yes. I have plans.
More on that later. And I’ll have a full report when it arrives.

Kickstand Love

I installed my new Pyramid kickstand this morning. It was love at first park

Now my Redline R530 stands upright and steady for loading. I’m thinking the Redline people ought to make this style kickstand standard equipment on this model.
Other things I’ve added:

Handlebar mirror
Front basket mount
Hobson seat
BMX pedals

Bicycle Commuting Is Hard to Do?

It’s common for those of us who commute regularly by bicycle to hear expressions of amazement from co-workers about how difficult and inconvenient it must be. Take a look at this picture. Does this woman look like she’s enduring an inconvenient hardship?

Moving on the Cheap

I should write some kind of introduction or manifesto to introduce this blog. I’ve been writing the Rhetorica blog for more than six years. It is a blog about press-politics and has a national audience. But recently I was posting some articles about local bicycle commuting-waaaay off topic. Personal or alternative transportation is a local [...]
