Sadly, Springfield Makes This List

Lists are necessarily simplistic, but that doesn’t mean lists are without value. On this one, Springfield lands at number 10, and it points up problems we are quite well aware of. The question is, what are we going to do about (from American Fact Finder):

  1. Poverty rate: 26.4%
  2. Poverty rate for children under 18: 34.7%
  3. Education, bachelor’s degree or higher: 12.3%
  4. Median household income: $32,473
  5. Unemployment rate: 9.3%

What? That’s absurd. I’ve lived here my whole life and never been robbed. Well, except that one time my stereo and speakers were stolen out of my car in high school… oh wait.

While the stats are terrible and I want to see the city improve, some of those stats make it a great place to live for people who do have higher incomes. I love the neighbourhood where we live, and we can live way more comfortably here than if we lived on the coast. Housing, gas, and many goods and services are a lot cheaper here. Groceries are kind of high, but compared with the rest, that’s not too bad.

I choked on that stat, too. I’m not able to figure out how they arrived at it except that it may be simply an odds calculation of some kind.

Hmm, 6 of the 10 are run by Dems, 2 by Reps, and the other 2 are “I’s”. All but the Dems were elected in the last two or three years. Which is cause and which is effect? Or is the survey simply an artifact of the far right? I’m ashamed to admit that the Springfield mayor is a Libertarian, though he’s also a recent admit to the “Mayors of Shame” list.
