Live in a place like this…
…and use 1/3 the energy of a suburban home.
It’s like getting a raise 😉

I suppose, though I’d give odds my “suburban” home in Ocean Shores uses far less energy than a loft in Missouri. In all honesty, we DID use the AC one day last summer just to make sure it worked. We also had snow one morning last February. Mostly, this is a personal lifestyle choice.
American kids, who will grow up to cherish SUVs and McMansions more than they do a clean and sustainable planet, are often a liability. Not entirely out of choice but out of a lot of demands of an untenured junior faculty couple in Hawaii, we passed on Xeroxing ourselves.
“demands on an untenured….”
Steve … Obviously, there will be individual differences. An earth ship home will knock the pants off my loft, too. The point isn’t that any loft will beat any house. The point is to be found in the aggregate. I have a buddy who owns a suburban house in SGF that’s totally off the grid. He beats me, too.
