This Fall: Walking Meetings

I’m a professor. I sit office hours — meaning I am required to have a schedule of hours in my office so students are guaranteed to find me. Here’s an idea: Walking meetings.

Two reasons:

1. I may live longer.

2. Aristotle did it (for good pedagogical reasons).

plato_aristotleHmmmmm… now, how to schedule such things and keep myself ever available. Social media perhaps? Perhaps my colleague Colby J. can help me write a Find Dr. Cline app.¬†That would be cool :-)

Facebook and Twitter could also play a role. And simple texting.

Any ideas out there in CT land?

Good idea. I often like to meet with people in non-standard places. I think it helps break the ice and avoid the old “I’m the scientist sitting in my office” weirdness.

    Nowdays Aristotle would be sued.

GPS tacking. Most of your students could find you with their smartphones.

Michael… Yeah, I’m giving that some thought. I wonder how something like that could be limited to my office hour times. I’ve set up a Facebook group as the initial scheduling mechanism.

I haven’t used it to do what your thinking about, but Motion X GPS is a really solid app that might let you do it. It will let you “check in” with a map of your location on Facebook when and where ever you want.

There is, of course, the traditional way.

Walking after class to the pub. That is what Plato and Aristotle are doing in the picture. :)

Kevin… Yes, those were the days. That’s exactly what I remember as a student in the 70s. Sadly, those days are gone — at least here in the U.S. with the 21 drinking age and fear of lawsuits and sexual harassment.

Michael… I have Motion X. I’ll look into that. Thanks!
