Honk Report: Soooo Predictable

If it’s spring on Cherry north of campus (where many fraternity and sorority houses are located) then it must be time to honk at bicyclists. Just a few minutes ago, for example. This is one of the three areas in town where honks have occurred most for me (in no particular order):

1. Cherry north of the MSU campus
2. Intersection of Walnut and Kimbrough
3. Booneville where I ride in the street rather than in the bicycle lane

I think the reason for the honks in these areas –all within the urban core — is the same: I’m violating their right to maximum convenience on the road. OK, so maybe that’s the reason for honks in most places :-)

After logging my own experience with honkers (thanks to your inspiration), they now bother me far less than they used to.
To paraphrase a popular saying from the world of hip-hop: Haters gonna hate, and honkers gonna honk.

Carfreepvd… I’m still getting there re: bother. Today I managed to hold myself to giving the ol’ stink-eye :-)

Good for you, you’re getting there. I eventually have come to rely on an alternate response: an enthusiastic wave or a vigorous thumbs up. It’s just as much fun as the ol’ “FU, Jack” and in my mind at least, sends a delightfully mixed message. I would like to think this confuses the enemy, so to speak. And, it’s rated ‘G’ for Granny’s in the Audience. Unless, of course, the driver has passed dangerously close, then I invite them to say hello to my lil’ friend (pace Tony Montana) ;)

    Cheers.

We have yet another construction project going down on the main road from Los Alamos to the national laboratory. Last time around, the county got complaints from indignant motorists that bicyclists were passing them—while riding in the bike lane. Well, duh….
