Now back to my regular blogging in which I pretend to be a mild-mannered, slightly rumpled and befuddled college professor.

Actually, I believe it is Maes who is the agent. Of what, I’m not exactly real sure. What happened to the notion that conservatives were “small government” people? Nowadays the liberals want to smother us in door zone bike lanes and helmet laws, while the conservatives want to ban us as subversive elements so they can increase subsidies to motorists. I’m not sure which is worse.

What seems the most silly to me is that often conservatives biggest complaint about bicyclists is that they are “liberals.”

Thats more or less what this gentlemen is saying and as I watch the news I’m often convinced that many of our Republican politicians are against bicycling simply because they think they should.

This is why my advice to advocates is that if you make bicycling a political issue then it will be a political issue. George W Bush was POTUS when I first went to the National Bike Summit. I learned that year that most bicycle advocates are liberals and quite outspoken about it. Most (literally) found it impossible not to cringe and have some sort of outburst if anyone on the stage ever mentioned the President. I was very disappointed in my brethren. They had convinced themselves that republicans hated bicycles and anything that did not have to do with burning fossil fuels. Thats not only not true, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It struck me that the League would have been better off paying a few of those “advocates” to stay home.

Robert… Agreed. And thanks for the summit anecdote.
