Crazy Season Has Arrived

The crazy season has begun.

Always mark these four weeks on your calendar: The two weeks before classes begin at MSU and the two weeks after classes begin. You’ll also note that all other schools will begin classes at some point during these four weeks.

Just crazy.

The streets of Springfield are already filling with crazed drivers running school-related errands. As the start date approaches, parents from out of town will be bringing their students to one of our many institutions of higher learning. All of them, apparently, are just learning to drive. Or, perhaps, there’s something about the stress of this occasion that permits them ignore the most basic traffic “suggestions” (I hesitate to call them laws).

  • Intersections will be choked with the unaware and the uncaring.
  • One-way streets will fill with darting drivers — going the wrong way.
  • Right turners at those intersections with the new, wider turn radii will be utterly ignoring red lights.
  • Traffic on National Ave. will increase by many hundreds of vehicle per hour.
  • Crazed drivers will be cruising on the look-out for free parking — and not on the look-out for road users smaller than an SUV.
  • The areas around the various campuses will be filled with freshman on bicycles riding like children.

It’s a really good idea to be extra vigilant — extra careful — out there for the next four weeks.

Good luck!

If only there were a venue for teaching these young-uns (yes, I am 40 now so I can call them young-uns) the proper way to ride… But hey, when you are invincible, things like safety and common sense are the least of your worries. Thanks. I feel much older now. All I need is a porch with a rocking chair, spitoon, and something to whittle!!!

It seems to get a bit silly around here in the mornings when school starts again. Even school busses run around in places you’d normally never see them and I see dropoff parents lined up places I wouldn’t expect.

As for your advice that it is “really good idea to be extra vigilant” applies even when it ISN’T crazy. It’s just good practice any time.
