Fender Love

While I do own and play a¬†Telecaster Deluxe, the love I speak of today involves those slabs of plastic around my bicycle wheels that will keep me dry on my ride downtown this morning. I’m loathe to make too many generalizations about what bicycle equipment you should have (although I do it anyway), but I’m comfortable claiming that if you’re going to ride a bicycle for transportation then you ought to seriously consider fenders. A chain case is nice, too.

Even fair-weather utility bicyclists will get some good out of these. Fenders and chain cases keep all kinds of gunk off you and your bicycle.

Fenders are one of the paving stones of which the road to Hell is constructed. They are part of a slippery slope that include such abominations as racks, kickstands, and trailers. While I do admit to having fenders on two of my bikes, the bulk of my utility miles are sans fenders. It costs me ten minutes each way on my commute to run with fenders and rack.

Besides, don’t y’all clean your bike thoroughly at least every couple of days anyway?

Steve… I’ve gone all the way to the darkside. A guy once commented here that I have more shit on my bicycle than a bull’s ass :-) But, seriously, how do you keep road schmutz off of you when it rains w/o fenders?

You revel in the glory of the cool wetness and the schmutz, and clean the chain when you get home. In North Texas, this time of year, the wetter the better as long as there’s no lightning. Besides, fenders don’t keep your feet dry. And I DID say I have fenders on two of my bikes.

But a kick stand? Don’t they have buildings, trees, and rocks in Springfield?

PS: Website link goes to a shot of my winter commute bike. I think your fenders are unlikely to help do much other than make it harder to get rid of the mud… ;-)

I guess it didn’t. Anyway, the bike is in my new post. It does have fenders now, which is partly why I’m riding my road bike to work.
