Bicycle Lane Safety Study

Thanks to Dan Gutierrez for posting this to Facebook: Bicycle Tracks and Lanes: A Before-After Study.

I’m a bit old-fashioned; anything that I want to study carefully I prefer to read in print. So I’m taking my printed copy of this study and heading straight to the Mudhouse for java and reading. I’ll post a reaction here later today.

I’ll need to read more carefully, but this study reports changes in the numbers of crashes. “Crashes increased by 18%,” for example. But really, one needs to look at crash rates. The study says that bike traffic increased where these facilities were built (more for a cycle track than a lane). So per 1,000 bikes did the number of crashes increase or decrease? Not to be flip, but more crashes might be the result of the more cyclists that these facilities do attract.

For our vehicle safety studies here, for an intersection we report crashes per 100,000 vehicle entries (into the intersection). Raw numbers of crashes might not tell a meaningful story.

Matt… I do not intend just to parrot the finding of this study. Instead, I’m thinking this offers food for thought in conjunction with what experienced riders experience on the road.
