On Not Getting Wet

So it’s raining like crazy this morning. Dark. Thunder. Lightening. The streets are babbling brooks. Just awful. So I decide to walk instead of ride.

I think cars change who we are. We sometimes do things behind the wheel of a car that we would not think of doing face to face. A car provides a certain measure anonymity similar to a computer screen. So on my walk to work today — sidewalks all the way — I wondered if anyone would splash me — intentionally or otherwise.

Yes, cars change who we are. But we don’t have to let that happen.

This morning provided more evidence why Springfield is a good place to walk and ride a bicycle (and can become a great place). Along several stretches of Fremont and Grand there was plenty of water in the roadway. Drivers went out of their way not to pass through it as they passed me — and I was on the sidewalk! I saw several who pulled nearly into the other lane to avoid hitting a puddle that would have soaked me.

Thank you, Springfield.
