Bending To My Will

I’ve been nagging my wife for a couple years now to get a new bicycle — one more suited to utility bicycling around Springfield’s urban core. But, until yesterday, she maintained that her old Giant mountain bike was perfectly good.

That is until her dress got snagged in the rear brake.

We were meeting for lunch yesterday downtown. She arrived with a greasy tear on the hem of her dress and a more willing attitude about getting something new.

Today, we picked up her new Kona Africabike from Queen City Cycles.

She hopped on and rode to her NAACP meeting.

She arrived home with her dress in perfect shape :-)

Is that the saddle that came with the Kona?

The bike will function as an urban commuter not in the outback. Put some street tires on it.

Steve… That’s her old saddle, which she likes better than the original equipment.

Michael… Those tires are a bit knobby.

I second Michael’s comment. Knobbies don’t do well on pavement and can wash out under you on a corner. If you want something dual-purpose, our police department uses Continental Town & Country Street Tires. I put them on my mountain bike, they’re working well for me.

Keri… The knob pattern is much denser toward the middle of the tire creating something like a slick. The knobs you can see in the picture are much farther to the outside of the tire. On the way to and from church this morning, I noticed that the bike rolls very smoothly and quietly.

Yes, too much knobbiness can be a problem. I’m thinking these are fine.

That’s unpleasant about the dress… but new bike looks cool.

    Bruce… Yes, 3-speed hub.

Marc… We looked for a model with a skirt guard, but the integrated rack on this one acts like one.
