Last week ChipSeal published an excellent essay on the “arch-principles [of traffic] and the six basic laws of traffic that follow from them. The arch-principles are: 1) Stay to the right, and 2) first come, first served. The balance of the essay examines these rules and what they mean for drivers and bicyclists who interact on the roads
I’ve printed out this essay for my daughter who has been riding a bicycle for many years and is just now learning to drive a car.

The author is delusional. There are only two rules of the road in Texas.
1) Dodge the man, goat, semi-truck tire, lawn-mower, and chest of drawers that just fell off the truck in front of you on the highway (and yes, I have dodged ALL of those things in the last year in Houston, the goat actually didn’t make it, but fortunately I wasn’t the one who hit it going 80).
2) Run down anyone on foot or bike. (And yes I’ve seen that happen twice.
maybe those are just the road rules in Houston… who can tell…

In your list of items in rule one, you have “dodge the man”. By that do you mean pedestrians? I don’t understand how one rule says dodge pedestrians while the second rule says to aim for them.
Perhaps you mean dodge the police? Are they common roadway hazards?
I think your conception of the rules in Houston need some sorting out.

So, Alex, we need clarification.
