The Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee of the Springfield Traffic Advisory Board (TAB) met yesterday. And the STAR Team met recently. Here’s the latest news:
The STAR Team spent most of the meeting doing a minor bit of restructuring and planning for our 2010 campaigns. The team set up three sub-committees that will meet independently and report to the STAR Team monthly. The three sub-committees represent our areas of emphasis for 2010:
- Bicycle Friendly Community — in charge of our2010 application to the League of American Bicyclists for bicycle friendly community recognition.
- Drive Less, Live More — in charge of general programs to encourage alternative transportation in Springfield.
- Complete Streets — in charge of the campaign to encourage the City of Springfield to adopt a complete streets policy.
I’ll have more news about these committees soon.
At the TAB meeting we discussed a report that outlined accomplishments and activities related to bicycle and pedestrian transportation for 2009. I will have a document avaiable for download shortly.
The city presented a crash report card (2009 January – October):
Fatal Crashes
- Ped 2007: 2
- Bike 2007: 0
- Ped 2008: 0
- Bike 2008: 0
- Ped 2009: 0
- Bike 2009: 0
Injury Crashes
- Ped 2007: 29
- Bike 2007: 33
- Ped 2008: 42
- Bike 2008: 48
- Ped 2009: 36
- Bike 2009: 42
So we saw an increase in injury crashes from 2007 to 2008. The figure fro 2009 are better so far, but still above 2007.

I assume those are reported motor vehicle/pedestrian and motor vehicle/bicycle injuries and deaths. Correct?
