A couple of thoughts (i.e. painfully obvious assertions):

1. Using a bicycle as basic transportation can have a dramatic effect on one’s carbon footprint, or, rather, one’s carbon trace :-)

2. Bicycles can play a role in connecting you with your community in a way that a car cannot.

    Funny – I just did a few numbers on the same subject before reading this – only from the air quality point of view. Bikes did well – for single occupant vehicles.

    If I were a clean air type, I’d be pushing vanpools. It’s a lot easier to get 9 gas-burning vehicles off the road with a vanpool than to convince 8 drivers to take up cycle commuting…
