Holiday Weekend Grab Bag

USA Today says more motorists will be on the road this weekend — a good thing according to the AAA because it “bodes well for the economy.” The story neglects to forecast how many people will die in automobile crashes as a result of the increased traffic.

Moving on to other stuff, check out this video I found at Commute Orlando (original source at iReport):

Hmmmmmm… How to react? Well, how about…

OMG WTF!?!?

On a happier note, I’ll repeat a part of yesterday’s post re: First Friday Art Walk.

Tomorrow is the First Friday Art Walk. Be sure to drop by Global Fayre. There’s a guy going to run a marathon on a treadmill in front of the store in an event called 26.2 Miles 4 Africa. My wife and I will be bicycling downtown as usual. Perhaps we’ll see you there.

Despite the threat of rain, I’ll be riding my bicycle downtown this evening.

that video is incredibly, disingenuously bourgeoisie. i don’t even know where to begin, whether it’s the super expensive electric transportation, riding on the sidewalks, or the effort put into making a one mile trip through town to grab an ice tea using bikes and cars made from inordinate amounts of rare materials assembled from across the planet.

Almost as good is the follow-up with Roman (the electric sidewalk rider) on the Rantwick blog where the guy sounds just a tad defensive.

ok I am horrified on how fast he was going onthe sidewalk. Totally WTF. The whole experience was dumb and useless.

    2. you have no freaking hair for helmet hair. Try mine asshole.
    3. you don’t need electric power to ride one mile on flat lands lazy ass.

Signed a suburban Bougie mama who routinely gets her daily coffee by bike.

(sorry for the foul language but that pisses me right off. stupid stupid stupid.)

Yeah, the thing pissed me off on so many levels I could only stare at the computer screen with my mouth hanging open afterward. Dumbfounded.

The “i” in iReport must stand for idiot.

Chill-lax … the guy was trying the two different electric vehicles to show which was the fastest for the trip. Both were probably way more ‘green’ than the typical motor vehicle. Wonder if the brew time for the coffee or the pour time for the tea would have made the difference?

I believe it was stupid and dangerous to ride on the sidewalks, let alone at the speeds he was doing. The contest probably would have been more honest if he had ridden the bike in the streets, using vehicular cycling principals.

I have read elsewhere that electric assist bicycles are the most efficient motorized vehicles in the world, period. As the owner of one costing less than $300, it makes me giggle going up hill more than any other bike I own. :-)
