I bought a new Kryptonite U-lock yesterday. I was using one of their lesser models. I wanted something a bit more beefy. To celebrate my new, more secure lock, here’s a funny but serious video about locking bicycles. It’s big-city oriented, but the lessons are good.
I keep a cable lock through my seat. The seat post has the only quick-release on my Redline R530. I don’t worry too much about the front wheel because a thief would have to go through a big hassle just to steal something that will only fit a very few bicycles. And the rear wheel on the Redline takes a masters degree to take off. I’m not too worried about it, either.
I generally pass my U-lock through the rear wheel and frame. No worries so far. But then I’m not parking in New York City.

My wife is moving to Chicago in two weeks. We are going to need a better lock. Here in Columbia we both just use dinky little cable locks that someone could cut in 2 seconds.
I’m thinking I will chain her brooks saddle to the seat stays. Put matching pitlocks on both wheels and get her a good chain lock.
Problem is…..thats about 250 dollars worth of security on a 600-700 dollar rig!!
