Bicycling and New Urbanism

Here’s an interesting podcast by James Howard Kunstler about the role of the bicycle in transportation and new urbanism. I found it, and a compelling video about urban design, at Amsterdamize.

Much of the discussion compares and contrasts the U.S. to the Netherlands. There is also some discussion about trails and paths. I’d like to hear Kunstler deal with other sorts of ideas, including bicycles in traffic as traffic, complete streets, and traffic calming.

One idea that I like from this conversation is “disciplining the car.” There’s no getting rid of cars, but that doesn’t mean cars should rule the urban landscape.

UPDATE: Here’s a video about the role of bicycling in basic transportation from New Urbanism:

I’m not sure most of America is ready to hear of “disciplining the car!”

Robert… You’re right. Most of America is not ready. Like almost everything else, it will take a crisis to make us ready. I think one is coming :-)

Okay :-) This is good and potentially interesting stuff… but when comments like “I get the feeling more and more that the airline industry will be dead in 4 years”

:-) Pass the bong man! Shit! Did you loose the Credence? Don’t mess with my credence man :-)
