Along the Galloway Creek Greenway

Last weekend I rode a short section of the Galloway Creek Greenway to make some pictures for the Springfield utility bicycling booklet — a project of the Sustainable Transportation Committee of Ozark Greenways with the generous support of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. I also made a short video of the northern section of the trail, roughly from Battlefield St. to the trail head at Seminole St.

[Note: The sound on this one is not quite as clear as it should be.]

    I liked the video!

But I got the impression that it was more of a recreational path rather than a commuter/utility route. To be a proper utility route the road should be a lot straighter, the gravel section before the railway crossing should be paved, and there should be a railway crossing guard arm that comes down over the bicycle road to ensure safety when there are oncoming trains.

Also, it should have right of way over other roads on which cars are allowed.

Still, as a recreational road, it looked beautiful. I loved hearing the sounds of birds!

Kevin… Yes. The greenway system is primarily a recreational facility. But both of the major trails in Springfield — Galloway and South Creek — can be used as routes to important destinations (although not always very direct). I’d like to see us complete a greenway ring around town that would create a very attractive beltway for commuters and utility cyclists.

Ah, paved trails. It must be nice to live in a city that has not gone completely insane.

Robert… Now if we could just get them connected. As for insanity, I may beg to differ in regard to other issues ;-)

    Andy,

Maybe you and I should consider changing cities!

I really loved Springfield. I would love to head down to Hammons Park, grab a hotdog and a sunny piece of grass and watch the bears.

Thought this article from the NYTimes might be up your alley. If you disregard the “style” references, it’s got some pretty nifty information about city bikes.
