Fun (and Safety) in Numbers

Is it spring yet? Sure looks and feels like it out there today. Gotta love 65-degree weather at the end of February.

The bikes racks filled fast on campus today. And I saw a few more people on bicycles downtown.

Two things: 1) It’s more fun to ride when there are more riders on the road — at least it is for me. Since I don’t do “fun” rides, part of the fun for me is seeing others on the road doing what I am doing: using their bicycles as basic transportation. 2) The more cyclists on the road the safer it is for all of us. Spring means more cyclists on the road. More fun, more safe.

Gotta love spring.

I’ve seen plenty of folks riding by the office here today. I have a hunch that things are going to blow up here in Columbia this summer with all the bike lanes, sharrows and classes etc.

I hope that I can go an entire day without seeing an automobile! Okay, I would settle for going 1/2 of a second without seeing one. : )

Robert… I suspect you will see an explosion. Columbia was looking good at the MoBikeFed awards ceremony yesterday.

Why don’t you do “fun” rides? Does that mean you only use the bike for transport and not casual rides?

I do not know if I do “fun rides” or not.

When I first started riding all I thought about was the bike. I would be driving my truck and thinking, “I wish I could go ride my bike!”

Now that I am car free and a full time commuter I feel differently about the bike. I still go ride for fitness at times but that is only so I can still easily ride 100 plus miles on a commute somewhere if I need to.

That said, riding a bike is always more fun than driving a car!

I would say I ride for fitness rather than fun when I am riding recreationally.

I had to work out what 65 F was. 18 C ! Wow. That’s warm. It’s still just 5 C here ( 41 F ). However, everyone cycles anyway, just as they have all through winter.

The sun is shining today, though, blue sky and it looks wonderful. However, even a few days ago when it was cooler and a bit grey, there were plenty of cycle commuters.

Robert and Alex… By “fun ride” I mean just riding for fun or fitness. Since I ride everyday — or very nearly so — I just don’t feel the need. I get my riding fun putting in miles as a commuter and utility cyclist. I also don’t do organized group rides for fun, largely because I do not own a road bike and rarely feel like riding that fast. Plus, I don’t own any Lycra :-)

David… Missouri weather is a roller coaster affair this time of year. It might be 65 one day and 23 the next. I ride in all weather (except ice and snow on the ground). Most cyclists who ride to work hereabouts are “fair weather” commuters.
