Academics and Bicycle Commuting

I have a guest post at the Social Science Research News blog encouraging academics to commute on bicycles. One highlight:

Live too far from work to commute? Not a problem. You can still cut back your driving by committing to walking or cycling for short trips close to home. A recent National Household Travel Survey showed that 41 percent of all car trips in the U.S. were shorter than two miles and 28 percent were shorter than one mile. You can go green simply by adopting the 1-Mile Solution.

Oh, yeah. Gotta promote the 1-mile Solution. Plus, this approach serves the important goal of letting potential bicycle commuters and utility cyclists know that 1) they get to define “far,” and 2) there are plenty of ways to go green close to home.

During the school year I leave my car at the location where my daughter gets off the bus in the afternoons. So, I drive 3 miles each way instead of 9 and get to bike a total of 12 miles per day.

I think the biggest thing you could do for new riders is to get them to take a good LAB course.

I’ll share our survey results with you if you like. They are ridiculous. Nothing gets people to change their life more than that course.

Of course I am really biased.

Robert… Yes. I would like to see those results and any other data you can share about the course.

Pam… Excellent way to go intermodal :-)

I was flipping through an interesting photo book on the freedom riders… photos of their arrest and then portraits of them now. I was interested by the disproportionately high number of academics in the ranks of the arrested.

Will we see profs of English getting the beat down on the fold-up bikes? hmmm…. could be a student’s dream…
