I enjoy fall weather even when it is dank and dreary — two words that also describe my ride home today. Low, thick clouds. Temperature in the mid 40s. Just enough of a drizzle to make you wonder if it’s worth putting on a rain suit (I did not).
This is exactly the kind of afternoon that in past years would have found me sharing the road with vehicles only. But I saw several cyclists downtown as I headed home. One was just locking up next to me as I left. And the racks outside the library station and Coffee Ethic were half full. Two were parked at the Mudhouse. Perhaps we’ve turned a corner of sorts.
But what corner exactly? Who are these other cyclists braving the dreary weather? I think it’s time to find out.
I get a lot of satisfaction out of riding in less-than-perfect weather. I don’t like being wet or cold. I do like showing that one can easily commute by bicycle year-round in Springfield.
I continue to work on building readership among locals who are either new to bicycle commuting or thinking about giving it a try. And I hope a few people in city government are checking in here. I know some of them are aware of Carbon Trace.
Now the question is: Do I go back downtown this evening to meet friends for coffee? Hmmmmm…

Leave a card on the bikes at the Mudhouse and invite them to stop by and say hi.
