This is an unspeakable tragedy - a stunning loss for all who knew Ian. Ian was in the cube in front of mine at FAA, where he worked as a contractor. I moved to another division in September, and I hadn't seen him for a while. I heard that FAA was hiring some of the contract employees full time, and I told the manager yesterday to be sure and hire Ian. It was then found out that Ian had been killed in an accident.

He was a really wonderful kid, the kind of person people like immediately, felt comfortable talking to, and would like to know better. He was a few years older than my son at UVA, and he would tease me about my son's unfortunate choice of schools. Ian was much more positive about my younger son's decision to go to VT.

I don't know how a parent survives such a loss. It is all the worse since Ian was just that great of a person. Please, God, help them with their sorrow. Let them know that Ian is with you and at peace.
